Re: Help with Lasius Niger

Hello I've wanted an ant colony for many years (since I was a kid). Wife has finally allowed me to have one, and thought it would be good to do with my kids but have had an idea and need help. I'm from the uk and I was going to get Lasius Niger for my 1st colony. Was thinking about a formicarium fr...

Re: New queens, what are they?

This one and the Iridomyrmex bicknelli died? thats unlucky. Well now we know that pulling the wings off would affect the ant in a very negative way. Another way to check if they are dead is if they don't stick to the glass/plastic, or watch their antenna, if it does not move it's dead. I also think ...

Re: Iridomyrmex Purpureus

from watching a few ants Australia vids a little while back. I can tell you they are not picky eaters, grow very fast (may require new nests every few weeks), have strong bites, like moderate-dry moister levels and in the wild can get to over 11000 workers strong (this would take a long time to get ...

That's a cool trick! I will try that in the spring :)
it's a good trick. But there is a higher chance that the Queens are infertile and they seem to hang onto there wings for longer.

Re: Ant keepers in Australia NSW and all other states and territories in Australia

How much luck have you guys had with Nuptial flights?
I emailed a local Myrmecologist or whatever you call them about nuptial flights in my region. He said he finds lots of queens in march/April in my region which is helpful.

Opisthopsis Update. In the last few days i have noticed that the Opisthopsis colony had 8-9 pupae. Today and yesterday most it has been hatching. I have noticed a rise in activity in the outworld as they have unblocked themselves. I am planning to move them into a small Ytong nest as soon as i get a...
