Re: Queen or Alate? And what Species?
Camponotus castaneus. You might want to offer her a small tray of sugary liquid, although after that, she won't need any food until her first workers. Alates are winged reproductive castes, which can be male or female. Since you have a queen with wings, she is both. After she pulls them out, she wi...

Queen or Alate? And what Species?
~ 15mm long Caught in Western Ky USA On sidewalk next to open area (grassy lawn basically) 9:15 a.m. My guess is Lasius Claviger based off this: http://www.antwiki.org/wiki/Lasius_claviger but I'm not certain because 15mm seems big for a lasius species. Just tell me if you need an addition picture h...

Re: Found this ant queen and want to know what species it is
Omg I'm so jealous. I'm in western Ky, I've been looking for queen ants every day for the past two weeks. Then this last weekend I had 5 papers due within 2 days so I had no time to look and my dad said he saw ants flying. I think I missed it :!: If I don't get an ant this year I will be very upset....

Re: Nuptial Flight: West TN & surrounding areas
I'm here in west Ky, I've been on the lookout the last week with the rain and warm weather but so far I haven't seen anything. I've been keeping track of about 5 different campanotos colonies though and they are all extremely active, I haven't seen any males lingering near the nest so I have no idea...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings
These definitely flew Sunday (4/9/17) - I caught a dozen queens yesterday afternoon from about 1:30 CST to 4. Gonna try to get out today again and see if I can find some more wandering around. Around where are you located? It was in the 80's here in Ky but it was really windy, I went looking and di...

Re: Is a queen ant and if so what species
Yep, the workers in Ky are definitely active now. I actually found 2 parasitic queens here in western Ky though I don't think I will start a colony with them. It's my first year of ant keeping and I caught a couple workers and brought them home because I thought they might be queens. My motto is to ...

Question about where/when to look?
I have located 3-4 nice large nests and have been keeping track of them. Is this where I should look for their nuptial flight or will they fly somewhere else? I have noticed they have been widening their entrances a lot, I guess in preparation to allow the bigger males and queens out. Is it going to...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings
Just a heads up: I was looking for queens and found about 4 different colonies of camponotus species. I noticed them digging, which is strange because they wouldn't be making new nests this early. Then I remembered, to prepare for nuptial flight ants tend to widen their entrances to allow the larger...

Re: Need an ID on this ant please
After some research I think its a camponotus castaneus worker. The queen of that species looks much darker and has a bigger thorax but the worker looks exactly like that. If anyone can confirm or disprove that it would be appreciated.
