Re: California D. Bicolor

California D. Bicolor
A week ago I was at a Mtg tournament in my local card shop when I spotted this girl on the floor. The others wanted to squish her (thinking she was a fly or other annoying bug) but I instantly recognized an alate and cried out for them not to. They hesitated long enough for me to scoop her up (thank...

I was lucky to spot this girl crawling around at a mtg shop and scooped her up. It's only been a week and already she's shed her wings and laid lots of eggs. https://i.imgur.com/X6ddVDH.jpg A few more images: https://imgur.com/a/0BJYbzo Captured: Jun 1st, 29 palms California 8mm length, red brown he...

Re: Cute worker with a nasty sting
are you sure it is not a fire ant?  Nah, not aggressive or abundant enough. I'm not very good with the southwestern species, but this is a Pogonomyrmex worker, a genus known to have a powerful sting. Pogonomyrmex means "bearded ant". The beard supposedly helps to carry fine sand and seed...

Re: Help identifying queen
I wondered about Pheidole, but I didn't think they got that big. Largest Pheidole queen I've ever seen was 8mm.Batspiderfish wrote: ↑Tue May 15, 2018 4:10 pmProbably Pheidole, but difficult to tell without better detail.
Also welcome back.

Re: Double Cloning Queen
Paratrechina longicornis should be present everywhere, but as far as I know they are the only species capable of double cloning.

Re: I found ant colonies and I need help to identify them
8-10mm is not what I would consider tiny. I'll have to look up some better keys when I get home in a few weeks. Looking through lists of genera for possible candidates is tiring on my phone. In the meantime, do try to get detailed photos Here's a guide for getting great photos. http://forum.An...

Can't see the photos. Seems photobucket isn't friendly toward 3rd party hosting.
