Re: Are unrelated male ants attracted to other queens?

I found my queen ant swarmed with male alates of a different species outside its test tube. I am not sure if they are capable of mating with the queen and if they can even mate with a queen that has already begun egg-laying. Are you certain they were another species? Male alates are often much diff...

Re: Identification

Best of luck! Social parasites are hard to get started, and unfortunately everyone comes across tons of them.

Still, if you get past the first bit, it is just like raising a normal colony!

I would also estimate about a minute. It's mostly to reduce spam otherwise there would be thousands of spam topics and messages within seconds.
Thank you

Re: First species and specific care

I am pretty sure Tetramorium Immgrans is Native to the US, not invasive. Anyway, Camponotus is REALLY slow to get growing, but If you are purchasing a colony, it might be good if you get a colony with 20+ workers already. Tetramorium is what I would go with. I always imagine Tetramorium as the roma...

Re: Queen feeding

Lasius Niger almost always waits until spring to start colonies. The queens may lay eggs and brood will develop, but it will slow and stop during hibernation.

Although not necessary, it is common for ant-keepers to feed a tiny drop of honey or other sugary substance to L. Niger colonies
