Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Giving up already? You could go with some run if the mill pavement ants of course, but where's the fun in that? You want some large ants that you get to admire without a microscope right? Not really giving up, I'm just thinking it might be too late in the year for a flight of Camponotus at this poi...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

No sign of supposed Camponotus foragers last night. Either they went somewhere I didn't see or they weren't hungry. :(

Debating starting off with something from the GAN system but a) money needed and b) everyone who has ideal queens are at least 2 hours drive away, if not more. Oof.

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

So, looking around (a bit early tonight - it's still really humid) I have identified three species of ant at least that lives just outside... NOT including the "Camponotus" if they are there. 1) Teeny tiny red fire ant. No thank you! 2) Smallish fire ant, I think... problem is a lot of the small ant...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

The pictures in your previous post display different species of ants btw, not workers vs majors. Well, I did mention they looked closest to what I saw. Maybe I'll try and catch and get pictures of the three sizes tonight, to see what y'all think... although my phone isn't greatest at pictures. It j...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Oh! Another question, for when I eventually get a colony going... I also have cockatiels, and with their food (as is common) often comes eggs for seed-moths. So, periodically we get a small swarm of seed moths that I have to control and swat down. Not really a threat to anything aside from my sanity...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Hi all! I'm newly joined to the AC forums, and Hawkeye kindly pointed out this thread to me in his reply to my intro post, since what I'm looking at in my (shared) yard is most likely C. vicinus. Here's a link to the original post: https://forum.AntsCanada.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15326&p=61627#p616...

Re: Aspiring Ant-Keeper

Thank you for the welcome! I've seen your name around here, the few threads I've looked through. :) And maybe you can turn on your sprinklers to provide them with an environmental queue? Unfortunately I live in an apartment complex, I don't control the sprinklers. The neighbors might look at me real...

Aspiring Ant-Keeper

Hello, my first post to the forums, but I've been watching the YouTube AC series for a while. I've been pondering starting with an easy species but it's hard to pick something that's easy, local AND hopefully something I can catch myself. I decided to make a post tonight, because I've been looking o...
