its bacteria, it forms if you or your equipment was not sterilized before hand, make sure you wash your tubes and hands really well when constructing your test tube setup, just make another one and transfer that your colonies

this is normal, theres really nothing to do during the founding stages so the queen is just saving energy, all you need to do before the first nanatics arrive is to just leave them alone

since you're in BC the majority of camponotus flights are basically done, most carpenter ants hold their nuptial flights at around april-may and you must have gotten some late flying modoc, the good news is that theyre are tons more species starting theyre flights all throughout summer

right now they are chill, but once a couple workers start coming they will definitely start killing eachother until 1 remains, you should move them into test tube setups asap!! dividing the brood is the difficult part, I would use a slightly wet cotton bud and slowly pick up brood and divide it even...
