Re: Silly girls
These are western harvester ants I got for my anniversary (Yaaay spousal unit for supporting my hobby!). They have a hybrid nest mini, and the queen has actually torn off her wings and settled down in the nest itself, so I'm thinking it's a good sign. They're still dragging brood out during the day,...

Re: Silly girls
May be something to the temperature. They seem to move the brood into the tubing during the day, when sun is shining through the window, and back into the nest at night. For a while, the queen was pacing back and forth, going to the outworld and back like she was a worker, which I think was mentione...

Re: 100% noob, figuring out what my ants want
Sounds like your ants may need protein. Without a good source of protein, the queen will eat the eggs. The brood need protein to develop. Best source is insects. And yes, they need fresh water, not just sugar water.

Silly girls
Today, I got my new colony of harvester ants. I'd put their test tube, which was a weird size and didn't quite fit the AC adapters, directly into my AC outworld. They wasted no time exploring it and going through the tubing into the waiting hybrid mini. Now, the hybrid mini was all decked out for th...

Re: Laws on shipping ants USA Please Help!!!
As far as I have seen, the only type of ant that can be legally shipped over state lines is one species of harvester ant, pogonomyrmex occidentialis. That is why the GAN farmers are set up by state. The last thing we need is another gypsy moth plague. If you buy, buy local, but you're better off cat...

Re: All in ones or separate nest and outworlds???
It depends on what you can afford and how much room you have. I see advantages to both. My personal preference is separate, for one simple reason - cleaning. It's relatively simple to disconnect an outworld, switch in a new one, dump any straggler ants into the new outworld and give the old one a go...

Re: MY QUEEN IS STILL ON IT'S FOUNDING STAGE FOR ALMOST A YEAR
Are you giving them any protein? Your queen won't be healthy without it, as she needs it for eggs, and the brood won't develop unless they get a steady source of it. They can't thrive or survive long on just sugar water. Insects like crickets are best.

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!
hmmm i see camponotus is a popular species i will do some research on it(care sheets). i heard they grow slow(thats not a problem). is a ant tower big enough? I'd planned to put one of my two colonies into an ant tower mini, but unfortunately the queen did not survive the winter. I fully intend to ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!
They're more active now, but once again, very picky eaters. They're turning up their noses at the dead cricket, the bit of banana, and even the blasted brown goop that was all they would eat before. I tried a bit of strawberry, but can't tell if they've been at it or not. So it seems they're back to...

Re: Camponotus Pennsylanicus - Y3 Growth Question
Ah, C. Penns, how I love these! My girls rather enjoyed hummingbird mix (do NOT use the colored stuff), if you want something different. But raw, unbleached sugar in water is a lot cheaper and they chug it just as fast. Kudos on giving them fruit. Are your girls awake yet? Mine are still on the snoo...
