I just use well water that comes out of my tap.
You can do that if you don't live with city water loaded with chlorine. We're not all that lucky.

Say I'm an idiot...

Scratch that. Say I'm a complete and utter moron who managed to clog up her kitchen sink through a combination of clumsiness compounded by sheer stupidity. Any ideas how to clear that out?

I'm a fan of rainwater from my rain barrels. Use it for my carnivorous plants now that hibernation is over, my fish, my turtles, my house plants, and my ants!

Re: new harvester ants on the way need info about them and if a gel ant home is ok its suposed to be safe im making sure

Just the ants are fine for a gel farm because they won't live long enough for it to be a real problem. An actual colony needs an actual nest. If you have a colony with a queen and 20+ workers you can move them into a small formicarium. Mine are in an AC hybrid mini nest. They need high hydration for...

Re: Can u help me? I bought camponotus Albosparsus

For future reference, I would strongly recommend NOT purchasing pets you don't know how to take care of. I got caught with my pants down with a lovely thoughtful yet non-native gift and immediately spent hours doing research on-line. Fortunately, I had enough ant-keeping equipment for the ants I do ...

Re: Set-ups for non-climbers

You don't think the glue itself would cause any problems? It's a big tube, one of the bigger ones that fits the AC set-ups, so not too worried about clogs. I figured I could use Elmer's school glue, just wanted to make sure it would be safe for the ants.

Best foods for Western Harvesters

Received a colony of Pogo Occidentalis ants as a gift, which was lovely and thoughtful. Only problem is, these aren't native ants and all I know about them, I learned from the Squat brothers, Jack and Diddly. So I've done a lot of research online. Seeds are the number one diet staple, so I've given ...

Re: 100% noob, figuring out what my ants want

Kudos for keeping native ants! Other than the colony I got as a gift, that's all I keep. It's just better all around, both for the ants and the environment! Food for thought, pun intended, have you tried bee pollen? It's a good source of protein, something the ants would have exposure to normally in...

Set-ups for non-climbers

I have a colony of western harvester ants (pogo occidentalis) that the spousal unit got me for our anniversary. Right now, they're quite content in an AC hybrid mini attached to an AC outworld with the desert biome (I wanted them to feel at home). The queen is Peggy Sue and the workers are the Farm ...

Re: About Observing My Queen

Honestly, the jury is still out as to the red light thing. I've seen some people saying it works on some ants and not others, I've seen people saying no ants can see red light, and I've seen people saying the whole red light thing is bunk. Agree that you should disturb your queen as little as possib...
