Re: Carpenter ant size??

Sadly the queen mysteriously died a couple days after my post. I don’t think I got any pictures of it. Luckily I have seen more at a park about a mile from there and I’m planning to go back soon to see if I can find anymore so I get get pictures and ID.

Re: Queen ant identification

What is the length of the queen? Centimeters or Millimeters work best.

Re: Finding queen ants

I don’t know about your specific area but this time of year often has ants flying. In Texas we have fire ant nuptial flights now and other unknown ants that I haven’t identified yet.

Re: Queen, Eggs and Food

I’ve been in similar situations before. I have not gotten to a stage with a formicarium but by now I know a lot about test tube set ups  1st, make sure the queen is warm enough. If she is in a cold room with air conditioning she may not lay eggs. 2nd, it can take anywhere from a few days to a w...

Carpenter ant size??

Today I was biking in a local park and saw a queen ant on the ground. Normal I see fire ant queens but this one was bigger with bigger wings. I caught it to ID it but I’m still new to identifying ants. It has a red head and black thorax similar to a fire ants but its head is bigger and more squared ...

Re: Ants too cold| help?

How do I set it up? Also they’re in plastic test tubes but I don’t think that will be effected at the heat it will be at.

Re: Baby powder and rubbing alcohol?

I tried using this mixture once (for a millipede) and had the same experience. I suspect it has to do with the ingredients in the different brands of baby powder. I’m hoping more people will respond with more helpful answers.

Ants too cold| help?

I have been keeping A fire ant queen since December. Over the winter we had the heat on and my room stayed warm enough to keep the ants in. Recently I was having trouble because they seemed sluggish so I moved their test-tubes (in a box) outside into the warm humid Texas weather and suddenly they se...

Re: queen won't move

Willwithants, I’m still learning about ant hibernation (Brumation) but at the beginning of last December we were having abnormally warm and humid weather so a lot of plants animals and bugs were out as if it was not winter but the ants definitely seemed sluggish after it got colder.
