Re: What is your queen catching methodology?

For me, it's not so much where to look, but when. Know the time of year different species of ants fly so that you know what to look for. Know what time of day that species usually flies, and know what temperature they start their flights in. For Example, Tertamorium - beginning of July, 5:00am - 10:...

C. pennsylvanicus food suggestions

Can anyone recommend any favorite foods for C. pennsylvanicus? I've been feeding mine crickets and mealworms since the colony started last year. The don't seem to be excited about those food items anymore. I gave them some fresh killed superworms recently and they were super excited about it at firs...

Re: Anyone with Lasius claviger experience?

I'm trying to start a claviger colony this year myself. In September last year, I caught a load of Lasius neoniger and claviger queens. They were flying at the same time. All queens went into tubes and then into the fridge. In late February, I took out the neoniger queens and let them start laying e...

Re: Tube is out of water..

I think it will work, at the very least, it will help humidify the chamber if the original tube dries out I believe. Just make sure to leave a way for air to circulate.

Re: Tube is out of water..

I haven't faced this situation yet, but what if you treated it just like you would when they are not hibernating? Specifically, connect a new tube to the existing tube making sure to leave a gap in the connection method to allow for some air to get in. If the tube they are in now goes dry, they can ...

Re: Black Soldier Fly Larvae as protein source

I think they would be fine. They are also very high in calcium. An excellent feeder for reptiles. I'm sure ants will appreciate both the larva, and the adult fly.

Re: Need help identifying queen

Looks like Lasius claviger workers to me. Could be a claviger queen as well.
