How often should I feed them? Also, should I offer them water in addition to the protein syrup/sugar water?

For the most part they will probably fight. Either way I wouldn’t risk it.

I use just sand for my Lasius colony and they’re doing fine! I just put in some more water when the sand looks dry. Just make sure not to drown them!

Lasius niger are easy to care for and are probably common in your area. And depending on where the ants are from, around room temperature is probably fine.

We have warmer winters here so I don’t think that’s it. I’ve tried protein syrup with and without water and I don’t think they have eaten it. Would there be any way to tell if they are eating?
