What are some good resources to help learn how to identify genus/species?

I find AntWiki very helpful, but you kind of need to have a vague idea of where to start looking. Does anyone have any suggestions for other useful tools or guides to help learn what to look for? I'd like to be able to be more helpful on this part of the forum.

Re: Colorado Nupital Flights

Saw lots of nuptial flights happening this afternoon about 5 p.m. You could see them flying in the sunlight. I caught 5 of what I believe to be Solenopsis Molesta.

Yup, that's what they are.
Thanks for the help. I have 5 and I am thinking about putting 2 of them in the same tube. Would you recommend?

Please help me ID this queen from CO

Caught in Colorado. 5-6mm in length. They are fast moving, and unhappy, so getting clear pics was pretty tough. Re: Oregon/Washington Ant Sightings Post Here!!!

The ID post is here, if you'd like to see photos: http://forum.AntsCanada.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=4127 We are mos...

Just post an imgur link.

It sounds like you may possibly have some kind of Mutillidae.

Re: July 15, 2017, Longmont, Colorado id help

I have a couple Pogonomyrmex myself, and have been trying to get a solid ID for a while now with no luck. As of right now, I think mine are Occidentalis, and I believe yours probably are, too. Apparently, the most common types in CO are P. Occidentalis and P. Rugosus. P. Rugosus has a lighter-colore...

Re: Insectaslip/berrier-where?!?

Wait, cant even the workers climb walls if their queen is semi chlusteral!?!? Yes.There is a lid, too. It is all I had on hand at the time. I wasn't prepared when I found the queens. The bigger problem for me is that there are no connection holes in the tupperware they are in. Transferring them to ...

Re: How long will it take her to lay eggs?

Tetramorium work fast. If they are fertile, you should see eggs within the first week. After that, leave them in the dark, undisturbed and check back in three weeks. It normally takes around a month total to get your first workers, give or take a few days.
