Looks to me like Camponotus modoc! Congrats Yes on being claustral, yes on separation.

You have to learn to appreciate what is native in your area. Transporting ants over state lines is ecologically irresponsible and usually illegal

Also, do you have a journal? I want to see more of this.

Another great thing about using tubes is that you can put multiple, even for different colonies, all under the same mat, without a single problem. I'm indeed heating 3 colonies at once now.

Yeah, I like to start an outworld as soon as it is a struggle to keep them all in the test tube during feeding time.

Campontus spp. are usually pretty dry-tolerant. . . not sure about Messor spp.

In December she should have been hibernating, not trying to found a colony. That is most likely why she doesn’t have any workers.

At what latitude do ants stop hibernating? Do all ants hibernate in Texas? I guess I don't know how cold it gets in Texas. . .
