Re: Ant ID!!! WA, Australia. QUEEN OR NOT??????

Yes, it is a queen. Males of this species are easy to spot as they have really long antennae and have a tiny head with a super thin gaster. Queens and workers are almost identical, except for wing scars and a slightly different gaster shape. It may not have mated, but only time will tell. I have two...

Re: Ant ID!!! WA, Australia. QUEEN OR NOT??????

It is a queen! It’s really weird to find one at this time of year, they only fly during spring. And do you want to know what’s weirder? I found one with wings today as well! :D

They are semi claustral, so feeding is required during the founding stage.

Ant Identification

Hi all,

So I’ve already tried getting an ID on this forum but no one could see what genus and species the queen was. Well, now the queen has 9 workers, so can someone see if they know?

Re: Aguywithants's ants.

Basically, a ergatoid queen is a queen which resembles workers by the fact that they have no wing scars as they never actually had wings. normally they look like a worker with a larger gaster. Not all species have ergatoid queens. queen: https://i.imgur.com/afA8XVQ.jpg (has wing scars) ergatoid que...

Re: Are Wood Ants Polygamous?

Well, I can’t be bothered putting my research into my own words, so here is a copy and paste from Wikipedia: Polygyny Of Formica Rufa Different types of F. rufa group species have demonstrated different types of social interaction. Some groups are highly polygynous, with multiple queen colonies form...

Re: Aguywithants's ants.

so ergatiod means a de-alate which is fertile or all de-alates fertile or not fertile Only a queen that is mated, is able to reproduce, and wingless is considered an ergatoid Queen. So an infertile de-alate would not be considered an ergatoid. I am guessing that a queen who is mated but has not she...

Re: Double Cloning Queen

I’m not exactly sure what you mean, because pretty much every ant species can produce their own (unfertilised) queens...
Unless you mean that they are able to produce fertilised queens without a nuptial flight?

Re: NOO

Ok, well I believe that it is probably stress and hunger. Feed some protein and some honey, and keep them in the dark where there are little vibrations. Feed every 1 or 2 weeks. The only time they may come out of that dark area is for feeding. NOTHING ELSE.

Re: Aguywithants's ants.

According to Wikipedia, an ergatoid is the scientific name for a de-alate, which means a queen that is fertile. :geek:

Re: NOO

Weird! Why would she do that? The only explanations I can think of is that there is something wrong with worker, or that worker was from a brood broost. Was it just one nanitic, or was it all of them? :? :? :?   :o :o :o
