Re: My ants won't eat honey

Try soaking a cotton ball or piece of a cotton ball in sugar water. Most of my colonies never ever touch honey even though I always provide it for them. But they all eat the sugar water. Honey can be dangerous for workers as well especially the smaller ones.

Re: Ants moved into snail shell. Help!

The test tube set up is an ideal environment. The fact that the ants moved out of it suggests something is wrong with the test tube set up. Maybe dried up, moldy, flooding, ect. I’d give them a new test tube set up. Another thing could be that you left very little room in the test tube (meaning it’s...

Re: Need help with camponotus

The queens that laid eggs and never developed could have been infertile. If you noticed the eggs were off coloured that’s usually a sign they are no good. The queen that had 3 workers born sounded like she could have made it. Did you feed her? For all the workers plus queen to die at same time sugge...

Re: Tetramorium Question

Gee I keep detailed notes on all of my colonies, but I never considered keeping an eggs-per-week ratio. That’s pretty intense note keeping. Counting 5-7 eggs is the easy part. I guess you’d need a microscope to keep an accurate count after that. I will tell you though that the tetramorium Queen I ca...

Are these Mites?

My Lasius Neoniger colony is crawling with these guys. None of the ants have mites stuck to them at all. But there are at least 100 of these bugs crawling around inside the nest. Here are some pictures, but they are extramly small and do not stop moving. So can’t get any detail. http://i38.photobuck...

Forgot to mention that I then add larvae and pupae to the queeen with workers test tube. The workers look after the brood and forage.

Re: An observation I've made with Parasitic Lasius Queens and supporting research, Severn MD

I used this guide by Batspiderfish http://www.formiculture.com/topic/3252-much-ado-about-the-founding-of-lasius-temporary-social-parasites/ I have a Lasius Neoniger colony and I mostly use callow workers, larvae and pupae. I use adult workers as well. It just depends on the temperament of the queen ...

Hey I’ve also read that study, it was an interesting read. I have been keeping Claviger Queens for about 2 years and have always fed them. They love sitting on sugar water soaked cotton balls inside the test tube. I feed all the queens I catch sugar water whether they are semi-claustral or not. Ther...
