Re: Colony found heading into winter

As long as you can find the queen and gather as many workers and brood as possible, then keep them in a tupperware container with some of the bark/wood chips and keep them cool enough to maintain their hibernation they should be fine.

Re: Is The Exo Terra day/night a good light for keeping lasius neoniger?

If it's a small founding colony in a tube they don't need light at all. If they will have a foraging area, and you want to simulate day/night cycles, I would say that's fine, as the night bulb will allow you to observe them in the dark with minimal discomfort to the ants. The lighting would be more ...

Re: AC test tubes cracking?

The last time a tube cracked for me, I sent a photo and explanation to AC. They sent a new test tube pack to me free of charge, no shipping, with 5 test tubes. I haven't noticed an issue yet since then, but I have yet to chill any tubes for hibernation.

Re: hybrid nest mini

In the end, its up to you. I would leave them a choice when attaching the nest, either they stay in a test tube, or they move into the mini. They'll find a spot that most suits them, campos do squeeze into narrow chambers in wood in the wild. I keep mine in plaster formicaria with one large chamber ...

Re: hybrid nest mini

Honestly I would start with a test tube portal, with an added tube, then move on to a larger nest. The mini will be too small for carpenters. IE; for the queen, and once majors arrived. I would use them for my Lasius, myrmica and formica however.

Re: Can queens restart a colony?

Man that's a lot of info but its extremely useful. I am definitely worried about stressing her through trying to feed her, but it is good to know it isn't impossible to have her restart. Do you suggest crushing fruit flies, or do you think it would be better to go with a bigger fly and crush that? ...

Re: Dead Lasius Niger colony - why did they die?

So, I got a queen ant from online in early march, in the normal test tube. It had 6 workers already. Over the next month, I kept feeding them mealworms, apple, and peanut butter. The colony seemed to be fine, except that it was growing very slowly - there were only 10 -11ish workers. But then, I ch...

Re: Young ant colony

Thanks, that's good to hear, so it'll be about three years before they grow massively? That seems like a long time, their brood pile is quite large, I would expect them to have about thirty ants in two months. 3 years has been the average time I have experienced before large growth. Obviously it va...
