I have no answer because I'm not keeping ants any time soon, but I'd imagine a cotton pad is less desirable since it absorbs less water and lets less air in.

But can I ask why using cotton balls are such an issue? I can't imagine they're that expensive.

What would be, based on opinion, the 'easiest' to raise? I don't want to be overwhelmed right off the bat from being a new keeper. I'm almost sure that's an ant. Termite's have much bigger heads and the thorax isn't as round. But I could be wrong.
