Re: Beginner help and ant moving
Hello! Have you tried shining a bright light on the old test tube? Also, what temperature are they kept at? (I'm asking this because they may be getting ready for winter, and this may be the cause of such inactivity). Check their brood as an additional clue. When they're ready their brood should sto...

Re: Queen not moving to new test tube
I've connected up a fresh tube, covered it and lit up the old one but after 5 days they aren't moving. No worries, ants could be very stubborn at times. Some of my colonies even took more than a week to move. A bit of stress is surely been caused, but not to a lethal level. Have you tried to ...

Re: Help with queens
Hey guys i just caught a camponotus queen recently and im just wondering if its ok to put her test tube in a slightly dusty drawer, like im not sure if the dust will affect the queen or anything. Its like only a little dusty so im wondering if the queen will be alright. Hello, don't worry, dust sho...

Re: New Queen Messor Barbarus help
Oxygen doesn't seem to be an issue for ants. They can be kept in airtight containers for weeks at a time, according to the experiences of other antkeepers on the forum. Now do I know personally? No. . . Love the updates, btw. Keep them coming! They actually need a very little amount. That's w...

Re: New Queen Messor Barbarus help
Thanks for your replies, to clarify, connected test tubes wer placed about 1.5 feet under a regular night table light. New tube covered with foil and had a piece of tinfoil with some honey on it as well as a few small seeds. After a few hours, queen started pulling the cotton over herself and the e...

Re: New Queen Messor Barbarus help
So I attached the test tube to a fresh one. I put some honey in the new one and covered it to make it dark while the current one is exposed to light. The queen is going "mad" and is pulling on the cotton of the current tube like crazy. Now what? Kind regards How did you attached the two? (Keep in m...

Re: Random male in 6 workers Camponotus Barbaricus colony
Yeah, I guess that could also be a possibility. Even though I thought only colonies with gamergates could do that.AntsDakota wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 2:56 pm(unless one of the workers somehow managed to lay a male egg and raise it in like a couple days).
Anyway, today another normal worker has hatched and everything seems to be alright.

Random male in 6 workers Camponotus Barbaricus colony
I have a small colony of Camponotus Barbaricus, with just 6 workers. The first five are all normal workers. But today, after checking their nest, I noticed a really weird ant with some tiny deformed wings on its back, a big and pointy abdomen and a big thorax (bigger than the head). Could this possi...

Re: New Queen Messor Barbarus help
Thanks for your reply. If I leave them in the test tube how can I change or add water without moving them into the smaller module? Avoid adding water to the current test tube, it will just flood. The best thing is to prepare a new test tube and attach it to the old one. Then cover the new one makin...

Re: New Queen Messor Barbarus help
Personally I would go for the smaller one, since ants don't need much space at first. Then when the colony will grow some more you could add the bigger one as an expansion if you'd want. I transferred mine when there were about 30 workers back a year ago (they moved from a test tube to a sand formic...
