Re: Strange Orange Ant?
That looks like a velvet ant/Cow killer ant. It's not an ant, but rather a wasp

I'm in Toronto. It's a little late for the Camponotus flights, but you may still find some. I found a male last night, which means some are still flying. I'd suggest looking around your house/neighborhood between 10 and 11pm. I have found the most at about 10:30pm. You can certainly start looking ea...

Re: Outside food for ants?
If you can't buy, wild feeders are your only option. People will say not to because of the risk of introducing parasites or disease. It's your only option though, so go for it.
You can setup a bright light, or even better a black light. If you have a bright light on your house, look around it.

Re: Lasius Sp.?
I tried with 2 colonies this year. Total failure. The cocoons turned grey and never eclosed. I guess the queens were completely incapable of providing any care... Next year I'll try the chill method. http://www.formiculture.com/topic/3252-much-ado-about-the-founding-of-lasius-temporary-social-parasi...

Re: Help identify mystery queen
Picture 1? I'm wondering if she is a little exhausted. It looks like her gaster has folded in a bit. The mystery queens gaster does look a little long and narrow, if that was the queen you were referring to. Neither are parasitic, they both have workers from their own eggs they laid this season with...

Thanks Batspiderfish
I’ll see if I can get a better shot. It’s difficult when shooting through glass as the curvature of the tube distorts the shot. Hopefully it will all come together

Help identify mystery queen
I caught a bunch of queens at the beginning of September 2017 last summer. I assumed they were all Lasius neoniger since that's what they all looked like at the time. They went into the fridge in October and I took them out in February, they subsequently all started laying. One of the queens looks q...
