Re: Questions re. starting a colony in an Omni Nest

Now that I've had some help from the folks in the species ID forum, I know for sure the first colony going in will be a Formica species - Batspiderfish thought probably podzolica. I also have a Camponotus novaeboracensis queen but I think when she needs a formicarium I might get the hybrid nest for ...

Questions re. starting a colony in an Omni Nest

Hi all! I think my first colony is going to go into an Omni Nest since I love the look of them and would be very excited to get to watch my ants at work regularly. So a couple of questions before I put in an order! -What size Omni Nest do you suggest to start? I know you can block off sections if ne...

Two New Brunswick, Canada queens for ID

Hi all! What a difference a good camera makes. I have a few MUCH better pictures of my first queen and some great pictures of my second to get IDs with :-) Queen #1, caught May 30; approximately 10 mm long. Tentatively identified as Formica based on my earlier pictures. http://i.imgur.com/9b1Ka9L.jp...

Re: Queen needs ID - caught May 30 in New Brunswick, Canada

This is Formica. Pictures are for a more accurate ID. Thanks! That means I probably will have two different genus of colonies :-D I'll post some better pictures of this queen (to see if we can get a species ID) and pictures of my new queen next week - a friend is lending me a camera with a macro se...

Re: Anyone from Nova Scotia, Canada

Thanks! I've got a post up in the identification forum about the first queen I found. I haven't taken any pictures of the second queen yet because she was pretty stressed out when I caught her; I'll try to get some shots of her this weekend when I check on her. Since I'm brand new to this hobby I'm ...

Re: Anyone from Nova Scotia, Canada

I have one queen I'm pretty sure is camponotus pennsylvanicus and another unidentified as yet :-) I'd be looking for something fairly small - maybe 6" by 6" - so that they would fit on my desk and so that they're not overwhelming for new colonies.

Newly caught queen digging at cotton

Hi everyone, I found another queen today and got her home and in a test tube setup this afternoon, but she seems to be frantically digging at the cotton blocking the end of the test tube. Has anyone encountered this before? Is there anything I can do (other than put her in a dark, quiet place) to he...

Queen needs ID (repost) - caught May 30 in New Brunswick, Canada

Hi there, I updated my post below but then realized people might not want to go through so many replies to see better pictures. Here are the best shots I've gotten so far of this queen, who is about 10 mm long: http://i.imgur.com/5ZbLy45.jpg http://i.imgur.com/qO7pzG4.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Y0b078m....

Re: Anyone from Nova Scotia, Canada

I'm in New Brunswick and just getting started on the hobby. What sort of price range do you think you'd be selling the formicariums in?

Re: Queen needs ID - caught May 30 in New Brunswick, Canada

Okay, I was able to get a better shot today, and I hope it'll be enough to get an ID! Thanks to everyone for the tips. I'm particularly excited to see that she has a nice little pile of eggs she's tending :-) http://i.imgur.com/Y0b078m.jpg If we need more detail than these shots, I think I'll have t...
