Re: A day as jimmy's ant

Hi,

The one thing I learned while browsing these forums is that the gel farms suck. The gel isn't that nutritious for them and actually causes them to enter a stupor. Now that's not to say you couldn't use it the setup with another digging medium. I just wouldn't use the gel if I were you.

Re: I'm new/ test tubes/ ant identification

Welcome! I'm rather new here too. So take my advice with a grain of salt. Out of frustration I ordered my tubes form amazon. The seemed to have an ok selection that seemed to work. As for identification; antweb.org. Under the "Bioregion" tab select "Nearctic" - that'll give you every ant species in ...

Re: P. Imparis - how long should you wait?

Valid points on all accounts. You are correct I was overly lax with my fertile prefixes. I will endeavor to prevent such future errors. However, as I am new to the hobby, assuming optimal (stress free, clean, warm, moist, dark) test tube setup - how long would you keep a fully alate specimen of the ...

Re: P. Imparis - how long should you wait?

Maybe once a week, I'd say every 6-12 days. (only three times since capture) Northern Massachusetts. Walking across my picnic table one evening. Standard test tube setup - wrapped in foil to block the light - in a small cardboard box that holds my test tube setups, in my media cabinet to provide heat.

Re: Mallonje C. Pennsylvanicus Journal

5/17/18 My first C. Pennsylvanicus queen (CP1) has eggs! 8 lovely little grains of brown rice. Currently my ant box has been in my media cabinet. With the odd weather we've been having and my inability to easily locate a reptile heating cable regulating heat has been a concern. I know that my tech k...

Re: Mallonje C. Pennsylvanicus Journal

5/17/18 Caught my second C. Pennsylvanicus Queen 3:10pm EDT 81 Bright, sunny, humid There was apparently a nearby, but unseen flight. I spotted a queen, but before I could get to it a little kid squashed it. Later found and captured a second winged queen. Still concerned she may not be fertile. Male...

Mallonje C. Pennsylvanicus Journal

5/7/18

Caught my first C. Pennsylvanicus queen.

3:10pm EDT
mid 70's
bright, sunny, dry.

She was walking up a wall at school. I pulled out my super tube and snagged her.

Got her home, transferred her to a test tube set up and added her to my ant box.

Checked on her every few days.

Re: Need Help - Parasitic Lasius?

Thank you!

I see from your signature that you're a keeper of this species. Any Tips or how tos you'd be willing to pass on to someone new to the hobby?

Need Help - Parasitic Lasius?

Hi All, Yesterday I was lucky enough to catch 3 queens of apparently the same species in North Central Massachusetts. They are 2-3mm, Black to dark brown, they have 1 flat node on their petiole, and are hairless. https://www.dropbox.com/s/v7z8fz18mbjftpz/20180509_113331.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox....
