Sorry I don't use Baby powder/rubbing alcohol combo, but I use PTFE and it works just fine ( I got mine from an ant online store). Hopes this helps

I think you've come across some alates which have just eclosed from their pupae (cocoons) and so their exoskeleton is still hardening and therefore is a lighter colour. So I would say still Lasius Niger.

When larvae spin cocoon they produce the silk using special glands. They might only need some substrate to grip to the floor so they can make the cocoon more easily. I have found that this isn't necessary, but can help.

I don't know about mealworms, Lasius in my experience can't get through the exoskeleton. I have always cut them open before.

Can camponotus ants be found in the uk? I've looked online and the information I've found doesn't seem to be conclusive. I saw a species called camponotus britteni that supposedly can be found in the uk but the samples were from australia. Some sites say they're an introduced species whereas others...
