I cant tell what type it is because I can not see any distinguishing features like petiole nodes can you post some pictures when her wings fall off.

Was this during the nuptial flight in your area? I'm trying to find dates as close to my area as possible.

I thin I also have this species of ant in my backyard, the size sounds right and I live in NC too. They live under a pile of rocks, so I guess they like to make their colonies under debris, because yours was under a tree. also, in the spring I plan to dig the colony up to find the queen, any suggest...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the key is for southern US ants!

I have a ant identification key, ant it looks like an odorous house ant, supposedly they smell like blue cheese lol! but i'm still not sure.
