Re: Please help

Have you tried covering the new test tube and shining a bright light on the old one? Also, during hibernation she must have a viable source of fresh water, but on the other hand, since she's fully claustral, she won't need any food until the first workers hatch. And for the brood, is it still just t...

Re: My journey keeping a Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Colony

Haha I bet. People think it’s crazy I only have 1 colony. I’m sure it will keep me busy enough. Indeed it will... don't make my same mistake starting off with many more and then realizing how fast they can actually grow... :? Furthermore it can be more enjoyable to tend to a single one, watching th...

Re: My journey keeping a Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Colony

Hello UnrealSparks and thank you for your reply. Your post does make me feel a bit more at ease. If all my workers make it through and more importantly the Queen, I will have a great start to next spring. 🤞🏻🙏🏻🍀 It’s going to be the longest winter yet I think haha 😉 Ahahaha I bet, but once your colo...

Re: My journey keeping a Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Colony

Sorry for the almost identical post. I was having connection issues and didn’t think it posted so I rewrote it. Unfortunately I can’t delete the 1st one :( Don't worry, it's not a big deal. :) By the way, a temperature between 8-10 °C is perfect, there is nothing you should be afraid of. Just make ...

Re: Caught in Alabama Mid October

indeed it does look solenopsis but in the opening post he states that the queen is 8mm in size which is about the size of a lasius niger queen and my solenopsis fugax queen was noticeable smaller than my lasius niger queen i'd say she was around 6mm in size Sub-species queens can vary quite a lot f...

Re: Caught in Alabama Mid October

honey pot ants Myrmecocystus mimicus perhaps your queen is a member of that genus I highly doubt it. She does look like a Solenopsis queen to me as well, as nmullen100 suggested. Here's an example of said species https://i.redd.it/lmoktozogxt11.jpg As you can see the "shape" is basically identical,...

Re: Nuptial Flight

Yes, kinda. It really depends on the species and the season, but from time to time it's possible to witness "late nuptial flights". Beware though, as far as I know, they won't happen "months" past the main ones, unless the species we are talking about have either two separate nuptial flights periods...

Solenopsis Fugax Nuptial Flight - Italy

Hi everyone! Hope you're all doing great! I'm finally back after a couple of months. :) Yesterday, as I was eating lunch close to my university parking lot (in Turin, Italy), I spotted a winged queen on my backpack. She was about 6-7 mm long, with a orangy striped black round gaster. I have a pictur...
