Re: Hibernation tips
So I caught a carpenter ant queen back on March 31st, and it's October now. The weather here is starting to get cooler. I live in the US, North Carolina, a bit south of Raleigh. I would imagine I need to start hibernating my colony soon, but I have next to no clue on how to do it properly. Some say...

I’m new to ant identification. Does anyone have dissecting microscope or magnifications recommendations to see the characters necessary to identify species? Any dichotomous key recommendations for United States ants? Thanks! Greetings to the Forums!! When it comes to ant Identification, there are f...

Re: Michigan Nuptial Flight
As of yesterday, Nov. 1, 2021 in Michigan, I have noticed some carpenter ant queens around my apartment, with their wings on and everything. I dont know anything about the species beyond that they do not appear hostile to other ant colonies of the same species. I currently have one of the queens in...

Re: My queen ant journal
30 October 2021 Another ant died. And it seems one more ant is dying. I think it's the 5th or the 6th one. It curls up but after some times get backed up. When I put it back toward the best entrance it runs back to the other side of the outworld and stays there. I have heard that when an ant is dyi...

I've never heard of Charcoal being used with springtails until now. Is there are reason why in the first place? My springtails did just fine subsisting off of the ants leftovers

Re: Ant hibernating
Hi, I’m wondering if camponotus novaeboracensis will hibernate at room temperature You don't "need" to hibernate your queens because their natural clocks will have them do it anyway. There are health effects to not providing proper hibernation for carpenter ant colony's if I remember a scientific p...

Re: Are unrelated male ants attracted to other queens?
I found my queen ant swarmed with male alates of a different species outside its test tube. I am not sure if they are capable of mating with the queen and if they can even mate with a queen that has already begun egg-laying. Also... Although the queen may copulate with several males during her brie...
