What happened to this colony?!

I was on my way home when I saw a bunch of black ants in between the sidewalk. I got a closer look and there were red spots, and realized it was young red ants! It looked like the black ants were pulling dead red ants from their nest. Does anyone know what happened?

Some things I have noticed ----------------------------------- They dont have a good grip on stuff (Fall off hands, bowls, anything. They dont bite or sting, when you put one on your hand they will just run. Which brings us to their speed, they run very quickly. When caught, they tend to clean thems...

If anyone has any clue what this species could be, any attempt would be appreciated. And I think this thread is in the ID center, is it not?

This is the ant next to a dime. Dont know if that will help :/
