Camponotus Queen likes mold spot?

So two weeks ago I caught a large Camponotus queen (Big Black Betty) and I've been keeping her in this big medicine vial with a wet cotton ball, but there is a black spot of mold that's been growing larger and concerning me. http://i.imgur.com/fCfwIDo.jpg What baffles me, however, is her fascination...

Re: BleedingRaindrops's Okinawan Ants

(Continued from previous post) And now to my favorite species. Meet Felicia. http://i.imgur.com/laK16oo.jpg I happened to spot Felicia's colony frantically moving all of their brood on my way to work about two weeks ago. Someone had crushed or otherwise disturbed their nest, and the flurry of activi...

BleedingRaindrops's Okinawan Ants

Now that I'm keeping Five different species it seems appropriate to just make one big journal. I am super excited to be able to keep these girls. They are just a marvel to care for. It's been about two weeks since I had the Nylanderia and Camponotus queens, a week since I caught a pheidole and parat...

Re: Ant Queens caught in Brisbane Australia. 22nd May.

I know I'm inexperienced, but that headshape looks super weird for Camponotus. If it's a choice between the two I'd call Iridomyrmex.

My first thought was pheidole, but just for a second she looked like solenopsis. I wonder why they're so similar.

Re: Rules & Requirements for Asking for Identification of Ant Species

5 simple steps to taking really awesome ant photos: Step 1: Background You need high contrast, to help see the outline of the ant. I prefer paper towels, as they are readily available in most homes, and provide a brilliant contrast for most ants. They also help reflect a lot of light, and have a wo...

If you have an android, go into the settings menu on your camera app and set mode to pro, then select the zoom function from the main camera screen and set it to manual. The latest update will enlarge the image for finer focus. If you have an apple it should be similar instructions but I don't use A...

Worker ID, okinawa

I saw some ants on a discarded cupcake wrapper next to a softball field earlier today and they were sitting still enough I decided to snap a picture. I believe they are nylanderia, but I want to confirm or update my guess, and I want to familiarize myself with what the local species look like. http:...
