Is this queen dead?

I have four pheidole queens I've been taking care of for two weeks now. None of them have laid eggs yet. I checked on them today to see if they needed anything (and to see if they had laid eggs yet) and I noticed one of them (image 3) is no longer moving. http://i.imgur.com/J9EQoA5.jpg http://i.imgu...

Re: Hello from Okinawa

Yeah I can see that. Nothing is hibernating here on Okinawa though. Not even the bugs. I eat lots of honey so they'll leave me alone.

Re: Help choosing a nest

After further research it looks like pheidole have been known to enjoy the Solenopsis hybrid nest, and it offers the most humidity aside from the Myrmica nest. I think I'll go with that one. Thanks

Earwigs as feeders?

There is a colony (I haven't identified the species of) that lives in the wall of a concrete building near me, which regularly hunts and kills earwigs. I see them dragging dead earwigs back all the time and I caught them in the act of killing it once. Obviously the ants like them, but do you think t...

Re: Buy Formicarium Now or Wait?

It depends on what you intend to buy. The omni nest, for its namesake, is capable of housing all types of ants, and while it doesn't appear in the natural shape of most ants' nests, most species will take to it just fine, so you shouldn't have to worry about any potential colonies you raise rejectin...

Re: Okinawa Ant Queen ID

Alrighty then. Any thoughts on what type of hybrid nest I should get when they grow large enough to warrant it?

Hello from Okinawa

Hi there. I've been on the forums for a couple of weeks now and just noticed this section. I'm new to ant keeping, but I've always found little creatures like Ants and spiders beautiful (though oddly enough I used to hate larger critters like cockroaches and crickets). I never imagined there was a w...

Help choosing a nest

I have recently captured a few Pheidole sp. (big headed ant) queens. I am ordering an outworld and I hope to move one of them into it in the next few months, but I also want to give them a nest. I know they like moisture, but I don't know much else about them or how much they like tunnels or chamber...

Re: The AntsCanada Global Ant Nursery Project™

Checking in from Okinawa, Japan. I'll be here for a couple years yet so I'm interested in helping connect any enthusiasts out here with some queens during that time.
Currently have no colonies, just making my presence known.
