Re: Omni or hybrid?

I love the hybrids. As Serafine mentioned they are pricey but to me the more simulate a natural environment for the colony due the the shape of the premade tunnels that are species specific and the cover to keep them in darkness until you are ready to observe them. That's my personal preference. I p...

Re: Heating Cable

x2 on the Zoo Med...I have all my test tube racks(3) and formicaria(4) heated by the one cable and still have plenty of cable left to add more to.

Re: Heating Cable and Barrier

I leave my heating cable on constantly. The ants can choose to get closer or further from it, but I keep mine in the basement of my house so having the heat source is nice for when it's cool down there. Just watch your barrier for when it become ineffective. I use fluon and I just reapply when I not...

Re: ooper's Pogonomyrmex occidentalis colony (#1)

Hey Ooper, Awesome log! So much great info. You mention after the test tube hibernation, you moved this queen and her few workers into a small formicarium. What was that set up like for such a small colony? If I remember right, I had one of Tar Heel Ants' formicaria that I had purchased to test and...

Re: Cale's Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony

Hey Cale, great journal, I'm so jealous. Just wondering if you had any recommendations for heating cables, lamps, etc. because I live in a region where it can get as hot as 120 F or as low as 23 F (both have happened this year O_O) Sorry, I meant to respond to this earlier but forgot after I made my...

Re: Cale's Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony

Well the sad day has come. Despite my attempts to brood boost her this queen has passed. I came back from 6 days in London and she was gone. https://i.imgur.com/IKjSDIR.jpg The good news is that the three Camponotus queens my girlfriend caught in her cactus pot are all doing exceptional. The first o...

Pretty sure this is Tapinoma.
Could be. I'm terrible at IDs. I normally only keep Camponotus, but when she walks right to you it's like she's asking to be caught.

New Queen

Caught this little lady while I was working on my motorcycle. She was just moseying along the pavement next to my bike. Caught at 3pm in Illinois. Just a little less than half a centimeter so just a little less than 5 mm. I was thinking Tetramorium but I'm terrible at IDs so I'll wait for Batspiderf...

Re: Cale's Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony

I have been keeping track of this thread and it sucks that happened to the colony. Hopefully the brood boost will go as planned. I've so sooo much research on the species even b4 I caught the 2 queens as they were one of my most wanted. The byFormica nectar you use, is that the Sunburst nectar? I'v...
