Something between 2 and 7 days (depending on species and temperature).

Re: can ants have maple syrup

Well, considering maple syrup doesn't occur in the wild and honey does, I would say they have the ability to come across it. Most ant colonies will not see a single drop of honey in their entire lifetime. Ants cannot just invade a random bee nest, it needs a bear or a falling tree to crack a bee hi...

Re: can ants have maple syrup

Yes, ants can drink maple syrup. In fact it's better than honey (seriously, how is everyone think honey is so great for ants, like when do ants get access to honey in the wild?).

Re: $

Substrate is most useful for species that like it moist such as Myrmica. It just helps to keep humidity inside the nest much better. For Camponotus it doesn't matter too much, if they can't spin cocoons they just pupate naked - I had a naked pupa in a test tube (that was before they filled the tube ...

Re: $

You can always use larger test tubes (30x200mm works fine, especially for Camponotus because they grow so slow and such a large tube can hold a ton of water so it doesn't run out before they have a good amount of workers) to bridge the time between the small test tube and the nest.

There's these so called "party straws" that are a lot bigger than regular straws. You can usually buy them at $1 shops.

Re: $

You should add a small bag of sand-clay-mix or some other substrate to every nest. Not only does it improve the way humidity spreads throughout the nest it also makes it easier to take pictures (because if you try to take a picture of ants in a very light colored nest - or even worse a white one - u...

Re: $

I was wondering why shipping was so high. The default cost is an additional 100$ on top of your already 100$ purchase. The cheapest one is around 40, but how do I know my package will arrive in one piece. AntsAustralia uses ytong & paints their nests for way cheaper than AC. + Shipping isn't crazy....

Re: A founding formacarium it would be good!

I have no idea how much space a trap jaw ant queen requires (they're pretty much unavailable in Europe which I don't consider a bad thing). There's probably some experienced people on Formiculture that can help you with this. For honey pots the issue is more that they need a ceiling for the repletes...
