C. pennsylvanicus back down to three nanitics concerned now

Another dead nanitic, in two weeks have lost two nanitics. Not sure if this is normal, but it does have me concerned. Still plenty of larva, pupa, and eggs so hoping the colony is still ok. As long as she out produces the losses I will feel much better about this colony. I am not sure how long nanit...

Re: Dead nanitics Camponotus pennsylvanicus

So nanitics do not live long? Getting nervous because I do not want more to die than what are produced.

There are still a ton of pupae, the other nanitics look fine. Just concerned since two have died.

Re: Dead nanitics Camponotus pennsylvanicus

The outworld is a plastic critter keeper. It was washed well before use, and it is very small. They have been foraging with no problem.

Dead nanitics Camponotus pennsylvanicus

This is my first real attempt at ant keeping. I caught a queen C. Pennsylvanicus in June. She has produced 4 nanitics. A week or two back I noticed a nanitic acting funny. The nanitic was lie in on its back and basically pitching a fit. I flipped it right side up and it did it again. A couple of hou...

Re: Grace Ant Journal

My C. pennsylvanicus colony is doing well. It is back up to four nanitics. One of the nanitics seems to be a dedicated guard. Their test tube has been put into a small critter keeper. The guard is always at the edge of the tube. The other three stay with the queen most of the time. I noticed one of ...

Re: Grace Ant Journal

Checked on my queens today. My second C. castaneus queen has her first nanitic. So it looks like my daughter will have a C. pennsylvanicus colony, I will have a C. castaneus colony, my wife will have one as well. Super stoked about this, we will all be building formicariums soon. Will probably be ta...

Re: Accidental death of a queen?

Pretty sure I injured my first Camponotus queen. I had a small container, I put the container over her as she tried to run. In the process her head ended up under the rim. She seemed fine when I put her in the test tube, she died the next day. I felt really bad about the whole ordeal :(.

Re: Moving queen with workers to omni nest.

Not sure, but I do know that with my nanitics two stay with the brood. One of them guards the entrance and forages. Not sure if that is the case with my newest colony, but that is how it is with my oldest colony.

C. Castaneus has second nanitic!

My C. castaneus queen now has two nanitics. Offered a drop of honey and a bit of crushed meal worm. Not sure if they have eaten any of it. My C. pennsylvanicus is still doing well, still unsure what caused the death of the nanitic. The other three nanitics are doing well so hoping it was just a one ...
