Re: Protective Custody

So all the stories of the colonies that come out of that drawer... are tales from the crypt? Heh, but catching up, quite a bit of excitement I see. Glad they are all doing alright. Wondering if you'll be able to snag any pics of the mega pupa. More or less, honestly I didn't TPK often so its closer...

Re: C. noveboracensis and T. spE: My first dive into ant keeping

The Carpenters are up to 21 or 22 workers - which already passes the upper estimate I had for total before winter. It's getting to the point where it's getting harder to count them. They still have about half their brood pile left and I believe the queen is on an egg-laying break. So well timed for ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Do you have a way to cool them slightly so they aren’t so active? Is the shrimp easy to access? Well I unplugged the heating cable so it dropped about 7 degrees but the thing with the shrimp is that it's kinda big and the ants put their eggs (not the larva or pupai) in FRONT of it. So the eggs are ...

Definitely Crematogaster spp, as far as exact species it's hard to tell from the photo. Maybe a dark variant of cerasi or ashmeadi.

Re: Protective Custody

The new nest boxes. They live in a drawer in my D&D room, the one where fallen adventurers are laid to rest, a crypt of sorts. So all the stories of the colonies that come out of that drawer... are tales from the crypt? Heh, but catching up, quite a bit of excitement I see. Glad they are all doing ...

Re: Merged a parasitic queen with a fully claustral one and her brood!

Awesome post, super neat that they are cooperating. I wonder if the umbratus queen will stage a coup once the workers arrive since she has smaller fat stores than the niger queen and might need workers to feel secure about food. I hope you keep us posted!

Re: Help a newby out

I think you are right on with the Formica fusca ID based on the photos, look too large and their gaster looks shinier than I am used to seeing in L. niger pictures. The first two I am having a bit more trouble with as they don't seem to have pronounced propodeal spines (spikes towards the rear of th...

Re: Strange Ant I've Never Seen Before

Thank you so much! Yeah, that's exactly what she looks like  Super disappointing that it's actually a wasp    ugh... I guess there's always next time. :P No problem! I think velvet ants are pretty amazing looking creatures, and in action they can be pretty cool too! If you're ...

Re: C. noveboracensis and T. spE: My first dive into ant keeping

Glad to hear your colonies are doing so well! Thanks! I'm trying to keep up to date on the on-goings around the forum but I haven't been receiving any new notifications since one on July 20th. I see CANant might not be getting notifications too. Wondering if any moderators are aware of this, I migh...
