Re: C. noveboracensis and T. spE: My first dive into ant keeping

Time for some updates! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Hs4UP__uYsg/XV20hw5srnI/AAAAAAAAII0/4Z_OXlwCDK4UHZf2edT_3LpCOjuXaC8iACK8BGAs/s0/2019-08-21.jpg Behold, 2 new outworlds, the stomping ground of my two successfully-established, wild-caught Tetramorium colonies! So, which two have successfully ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Lots of catching up reading, jeez what a great thread this has been. So I have some pretty cool updates. First thing is I finished building to my satisfaction a couple outworlds for the Tetramorium colonies. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Hs4UP__uYsg/XV20hw5srnI/AAAAAAAAII0/4Z_OXlwCDK4UHZf2edT_3...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Exact worker count for Camponotus novaeboracensis colony - 23. Also, while she has certainly slowed down on the egg laying I did catch some fresh eggs in one of the chambers, they have now expanded to 2 water tubes for brood. Looks to be around 20 more ants in the works that will probably eclose pri...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Woo, lots to catch up on, welcome Campo! Also, congrats on the nanitics, CANant! My main Tetramorium colony's nanitics just popped too - four of them in the few days since I last checked on them. My C. nova colony is growing to the point it is getting harder and harder to get an exact count. They ar...

Re: C. noveboracensis and T. spE: My first dive into ant keeping

Big update for the main pavement ant colony! The nanitics have arrived, and I had no idea there'd be such dramatic difference in morphology between the wild brood used for boosting and the nanitics. Not only are the nanitics smaller, but they are easily less than half the size of the workers from th...

Re: C. noveboracensis and T. spE: My first dive into ant keeping

So, time to introduce those of you reading along in my journal to an experiment I've been running that has so far yielded some interesting great results if you like speculating on the why's of ant behavior. My T. spE polygyny test. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B03hczVHYTQ/XUnoBObr-_I/AAAAAAAAI...

Re: C. noveboracensis and T. spE: My first dive into ant keeping

Finally checked out your log, lots of great pictures. I might have to bust out my t2 and try to up my documentation game! Looking forward to your new content! For my stills and video I have been using my cell phone with a set of lenses that come out to around $4 each. :P I've had a lot of practice ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Thanks CANant! Re: kherafox's Minnie An easy way to tell a male from a female alate for me in any species I've come across so far is by their head, specifically eyes and mouthparts. Males often have more wasp-like eyes and feature as well as underdeveloped or visibly absent mandibles compared to the...

Re: Protective Custody

Your fourth proposal is something I am personally examining in a Tetramorium polygyny experiment. Tetramorium occupies a niche similar to other species to pick up polygynous behavior though, but that doesn't mean the same might not be happening with Camponotus colonies, especially in areas they comp...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Awesome pictures, sartwell!! I love them. I'm thrilled your Camponotus have grown so quickly, it uplifts me a little, hoping to someday see that in my own home. I love the home-taken pictures instead of edited footage. Granted, both have their awesomeness, but it just gives me hope. My little Queen...
