The sand should depend on the ant species and some ants need more attention then other however, in my experience the colony does fine as long as you leave them honey, protein, and water before leaving try to use small amounts so the food does not all rot and if you really want to make sure your ants...

Are you giving her any sugar source? Such as sugar water or sugar. I would not use honey though because if she falls in she is as good as dead trap jaw queen are pretty agile but it still not worth using more than one drop.

You can dig up some grubs in areas from outside with no pesticide. No pesticide part very important, also I will be leaving on vacation to Colorado for fourteen days and will not be able to answer your questions.

First off stop checking on them so much it stress them out, second maybe it would be best to give each a fruit fly or cricket leg and maybe some fruit.
