Ants not classified properly?

Ants have an unusual classification where one genus can contain hundreds of species and there are 300 genera in the family Formicidae. When this is compared to mammals, they will have less than 10 species in a genus and less than 10 genera in a family, or there would be subfamilies to minimise the n...

Re: ant found in house not sure queen

It could be a queen, to find out, send an image clearly showing the ant. Images sent using the software of this forum have a high chance of not sending, so try to send a link to a dropbox if possible. Judging by the images, many people in this forum could identify the cast of the ant (queen or not)....

Re: Newbe alert! Need some help:)

Queens only crawl out of mature (large) colonies, and even if you see one come out, catching it would be pointless because the queen would not be mated, and therefore fail to start a colony. So, in short, a winged ant crawling out of a nest could be a queen, but it would not be of any use to you. Di...

Re: Ant friendly way to move a colony out of my house

You can, many of the people on this forum do that. Also, you can start a new topic in the 'species identification centre ' as another option.

Re: Ant friendly way to move a colony out of my house

Sorry, but I do not think that the photos sent this time either.
Most people on this forum use other websites such as imgur to end photographs due to arising complications when sending photos.

Re: need help about ant farming/ants in general

You mentioned several chambers, which may be the reason for the mould. A common problem antkeepers have is giving their colony too much space, which causes the ants to use one room as a dump. This does not answer your question, but large formicaria for small colonies are not always a good idea, beca...

Re: Ant friendly way to move a colony out of my house

Ants are photophobic (scared of light) but only when nesting. Uncovering their nest will make them leave, however judging by your description, that is not possible. A good way to keep ants from going to certain areas is to use cinnamon or peppermint. Ants dislike the smells and it will interfere wit...

Re: 2 carpenter ants paired together... problems occured.

The lost wings are not a problem. Queens usually drop their own wings off after flying, because they are inefficient and do not work anymore. That means that there are not any problems with this behaviour, and if a queen decides to found a colony without dropping off its wings, then the workers will...
