Re: I'd like help with hibernation

I checked again the fridge temperature and this time, placing the thermometer at the bottom of it, I got 6.8 °C (the first time I placed it at the top). I also noticed the knob is like on 3/5, so I can lower the temperature more if I want.

Re: I'd like help with hibernation

Thanks a lot for your reply! :D My fridge is indeed ~9.2 C°, I'll feed my Lasius Niger colonies for the last time today and I'll start to lower the temperature. Should I put them (with their test tube setups) in a small cardboard box inside the fridge for not disturbing them too much? Or will that o...

I'd like help with hibernation

Hi everybody! I live in Italy and I'm currently keeping many ant colonies. Even though temperatures have dropped a lot lately they are still pretty active somehow. I feed them once or twice a week (carbs and proteins) and they still accept everything. I'm keeping them in my room where the average te...

Feeding dry dog food to ants

Yesterday I tried to feed my two Messor Barbarus colonies with some crushed dry dog food and they absolutely loved it! I just gave them a little amount though just for testing. Should I keep feeding them from time to time with it as a supplement or could it mold easily?

Re: Messors love teff .

Mine love canary seeds but don't seem to find grass seeds as enjoyable. They still eat them though.

Re: Hibernation tips & suggestions

I'm sorry!
I didn't want to make anybody jealous, but I kinda get the reason. Even though I can assure you those little pheidole were a nightmare at first because they were able to squeeze through every tiny opening... took me a while to fix this problem.

Re: Problem with Messor Barbarus colony

Maybe this could be helpful to somebody in the same situation as I've finally found out the problem! :D I wasn't watering their nest often enough! Even tough colony A was doing great even without much water, colony B was struggling a bit more. So now that I water them daily I noticed 0 casualties in...

Hibernation tips & suggestions

Hi everybody! This is my first hibernation as an ant keeper so any tips or suggestions will be very well accepted. I'm currently keeping many colonies: - 2 Messor Barbarus (~150 workers & ~75 workers) - 2 Pheidole Pallidula (~100 workers & ~50 workers) - 2 Lasius Niger (~30 workers & ~20 workers) - ...

Re: Fluon question

Alright, thanks! Sorry for the late response but I've been very busy with university. One last question tough. When I'll be replacing the barrier will I have to put more fluon over the old barrier or remove the old barrier first and then reapply it? Because I read that applying multiple layers on to...
