Myrmicini, I think. Not sure which species or even genus, though, I'll have to get back to you on that. Solenopsis invicta is also an option, but the proportions seem a bit off to me.

Sounds like one of four things: the ants are hungry, the ants need more space, the ants are stressed out, or the ants need more water. Is there mold in the test tube, do the ants have any mites on them, and how often have you been checking on them? Those are the most probable causes for death.

Nope. They will just hang out with the other ants, eat as normal, and maybe help with taking care of the eggs (at least, the females will).

First off, very nice pictures! As for the ID, it is a Lasius species, but I will have to get back to you later on exactly which one.
