Re: Ant keepers from southwestern ontario

Took 3 of my foundling colonies out of hibernation. All ants survived. :) My Camponotus Novae are very active, have been laying lots of eggs and the existing brood growing fast. My Lasius Neoniger colony seems very lethargic though. Only took then out 5 days ago some maybe that is the reason (I Hope...

When Mikey went to Ant Shows

I noticed that in some of the older AC YouTube videos you can see Mikey showing off his ants at some event with lots of people walking around. Does anybody know what kind of shows they were and more importantly if they are still around? Perhaps it was some sort of fair or science show? I'd love to g...

Re: Hello From Québec

Bonjour Dragsteur, I'm in Ottawa so not that far. Just a little over a year in the hobby. My son managed to capture 6 queens last summer and they all produced workers. 4 Camponotus Noveaboracensis and 2 Lasius Neonigers. One Lasius queen died, but I was able to brood boost with the other. About 80 a...

Re: Hibernation temperature question

Well it seems that nobody has tried going the route of a cooler and Ice Packs but I'm gonna try so wish me luck. I have a thermometer in the cooler and started with smaller ice packs for now which is already near -10 deg. C. I'll be putting a larger pack starting tomorrow. From testing I've done for...

Re: One Queen dead. Can I merge with other founding colony?

I ended up boosting the brood, which the colony with the Queen quickly took up the brood. I still have the queenless ants in a tube and have been feeding them. Perhaps I should try to introduce one ant and see if they accept it. If it works I could inrtoduce one at a time. But most sites and informa...

Re: Hibernation temperature question

Here up North (I'm in Ottawa, Canada) ants dig deep underground (~4 feet) so that when the freezing temperatures comes around they are isolated from the cold. They can sustain temperates that are cold (~10 deg. C) but certainly not freezing. My garage is unheated so It's perhaps a degree or two warm...

Hibernation temperature question

I can't seem to find a location within my house where I can get within the required temperature range say at least 10 deg. celsius or lower. What happens if I keep them at around 15 degrees? Will that mean they actually don't go into hibernation mode and just remain cold? Is that better or worse tha...

One Queen dead. Can I merge with other founding colony?

Help! I have two Lasius founding colonies in separate test tubes and the queen died in one of them. Both queens were caught the same day and the same general location. They were caught mid August. If I bridge the two test tubes will the workers with the dead queen join the living queen and her brood...

Re: Ant keepers from southwestern ontario

Ottawa here. New to the hobby but already 6 founding colonies, 4 Camponotus Novaeboracensis and 2 Lasius sp. Smallest colony has 9 workers, largest has 16. Was hoping to trade one of the Camponutus for another new species so that I have more variety, but with hibernation season just around the corne...
