Re: [Brazil -Sao Paulo] 2 Queens

Update: both queens have laid eggs. However, I still don't know which species they belong. Some pictures below. The smaller queen is attending her eggs, but the bigger is just ignoring them. She stays at the cotton trying to escape. Is there a possibility that she is semi-claustral? Thanks https://i...

[Brazil -Sao Paulo] 2 Queens

Hello everyone, I need help to identify two queens. Both were caught recently. One of them already removed her wings. The first one is small, with the size of a few mm, about 5-6 mm. The second one is bigger, about 1,5 cm. She was still with a drone. She is beautiful (IMO  ). What I found inter...

Re: Black Soldier Fly Larvae as protein source

Just an update: I tried offering some larvae again, but instead of giving them right away I boiled the larvae for a few minutes. Using this technique, it took a lot more to start turning black and I saw some ants feeding on it. So, for someone facing the same problems, an advice is to boil the larva...

Re: Black Soldier Fly Larvae as protein source

Thank you for the help! I offered some pieces of a frozen larvae and the ants did not accept, but I think it is because the colony is very young (~20 workers). Once the larvae is in ambient temperature, it darkens very very fast. After 15 minutes it is completely black and after 1 hour it starts to ...

Re: [5 mm queen + colony] Brazil - Sao Paulo

Thank you all for the help!

I searched for Tapinoma species in Sao Paulo and the only I found is called Tapinoma atriceps, but there are few photos to compare them :(, but I'm very happy with Tapinoma sp. :)
Can Tapinoma ants really have multiple queens? So... Will this colony produce more queens?

Black Soldier Fly Larvae as protein source

Hello everyone, I bought some BSF (black soldier fly) larvae (Hermetia illucens) by mistake thinking it was mealworm (beginner mistake), and I was wondering if I can give them to my ants. According to Wikipedia they have a high amount of protein and they really look like (sort of) mealworms. Has any...

[5 mm queen + colony] Brazil - Sao Paulo

Hello everyone, On June I caught this queen. Since then, I have been taking care of her. Now the colony has 15 workers, but I don't know what species they are. The queen has about 5 mm long, red-dark color. The workers are brownish-transparent, about 3 mm long. No majors, all are the same size, they...
