C. Pennsylvanicus. I'm guessing that there is likely a colony of Black Carpenter ants in your warehouse which is where she came from thus making her unfertile.

Superworms would be too large and too tiring for a small colony of Lasius to kill. Better to try soft-bodied Drosophila or pinhead crickets.

I wouldn't recommend using heating cable for test tubes setups. Instead, use a heating mat. All you have to do is place the mat under the side that has water. But you shouldn't be worrying about this since your ants are preparing for hibernation (if not already).

My messors don't seem to like so much sugar water. I have tried many types of sweets and sweet liquid and they don't seem to to consume much. Sometimes they will take sugar water. Lasius alienus and pallitarsis will found colonies before hibernation. The bulk of Lasius Americanus fly in the summer so of course, they lay eggs well before hibernation. As previously stated it's only the late flying Lasius that doesn't lay eggs before hibernation. Of course, if you have records ...
