I hate having open top areas for them. No way to tell what happened. If they are in there, they got out. Whether they climbed out or something got them out(ate them). Is the queen still in there? Its possible they are in the process of moving to their new area. Since they are already out not too sur...

Biggest issue will be size, just made sure there is enough space for the queen to move around in there. Generally Formica are bigger than Lasius.

At this age, I would give them easy to eat sugars (honey is a favorite and doesnt mold easy), and protein (meal worms are easy, freeze them, cut it so the ants can get in both sides, and put it in the test tube). If they are very hungry you may need to put more drops of honey in there. Dont worry if...

As far as removing it? Honey generally takes a very long time to spoil, so you can leave it in there so the queen can munch on it when she feels like it. Plus trying to clean honey out tends to make a mess, hard to get it all the way out. I would wait until you see mold on the honey to remove it, ge...

I generally start at the end of feb. Id take them out of hibernation, get them warm, and start putting food in there.

I have one like her. Some sort of myrmica i believe. They are semi-claustral!! Feed her!!
