Re: Nuptial flights in northwestern Nevada?

Camponotus semitestaceus queens are out! Found 7 in my back yard tonight! 2 of the 3 that I got last year have nanitics. Gonna keep 4 of these, since they're polymorphic.
Anyone find a pogonomyrmex queen yet? I'm gonna go looking for those tomorrow, since I found a lot of them at this time last year.

Re: Nuptial flights in northwestern Nevada?

Has any one seen any pheidole ants or queens i would like a colony. I've found a couple colonies, but I don't dig colonies up. Their flights (according to the AntsCanada video) occur between June and the start of September, but while I've been in NV, I've seen ants fly much later in the year than h...

Just found a pavement ant (tetramorium caespitum) queen in Reno! Walking around on the ground, mid day in the shade. First find of the year!

Northwestern Nevada (Near Reno)

I've been looking for queens since ant season began, but haven't had any luck. I've found a lot of established colonies, but no queens running around. If you have caught any queens in this area, please tell me where it was. The time of day would be helpful as well, since I've been checking some plac...

Re: Nuptial flights in northwestern Nevada?

A person where I work found a winged pogonomymex queen in north Reno. I thought those flew much later in the year. Otherwise, I'm having no luck finding queens above ground.

Re: Nuptial flights in northwestern Nevada?

What time of day did you spot her, and what kind of setting? Desert trail? Or more greenery? I've been looking, but I keep coming up empty handed.

What time to find queens in the desert.

I live near Reno, NV. Kind of a desert in most areas. So far the only time I've found a queen walking around has been at night. Otherwise I've only caught queens that were either digging their claustral chamber, or they were already dug in, and I had to dig them out. Generally, with desert species, ...

They probably would have barely been bothered by you checking on them in the winter since they would be so lethargic from the cold temperatures.
Like I said. It's not a mistake I'll make again.
