Re: Camponotus larvae not pupating?

Hmm, interesting. They do seem relatively inactive, like they did last winter... maybe they just jumped the gun! Hopefully my lovely ladies will be all right and get back in business next spring. Thanks!

Camponotus larvae not pupating?

Hi all, I have a strange situation with my Camponotus novaeboracensis colony (caught June 2017, still in a test-tube setup that's attached to a test-tube portal for feeding.) The queen had about 12 workers at the beginning of the summer and laid a good-sized batch of eggs around the beginning of Aug...

Re: Went are more Hybrid nest 2.0 coming out?

Hey, one more thought about this; any chance you could set it up so people can preorder the hybrid nests, and they'll just ship whenever they're ready? Not that I'm impatient or anything :-D

Re: Went are more Hybrid nest 2.0 coming out?

Ooh, excited to hear that! My camponotus queen will be ready to go into a formicarium in another few months and I've been hoping that the new hybrid would be ready in time :-D

Using large hybrid nest for a founding colony?

Hi there! The mention of the holiday special on the new hybrid nest in today's video is tempting me :-D However, the Camponotus colony I have is brand new - I'd be ordering the nest early because the earliest I can see it having enough workers to need a formicarium is next summer - and I'm not sure ...

Re: Is this a queen?

Ah, too bad. I'll let her go back in the area I caught her, then. Thanks!

Is this a queen?

Hi all, I caught this lady tonight (August 22) in Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Canada. I think she's a queen but I don't have a lot of experience at identification, so I'd appreciate both verification and a species ID if possible! She's about 10 mm long. She's speedy so these were the best pictures I ...

Thanks for the suggestion! I wasn't sure if that would work for the very initial stage.

Frozen or freeze dried bloodworms as first protein source?

Well, to my delight my Formica queen has her first worker by her side! I have a test tube portal on its way, and I know there's no rush, so when that arrives I'll use that as a place to feed them. Our local pet store doesn't carry feeder flies, just crickets, and I figure those are probably too big ...
