Re: Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Colony Struggling

"Then, since sometime in June, the colony has seemingly just stopped functioning." This has been going on since early June : / I would agree that it is possible she needs more sugar/protein to lay, but as I said, the colony has displayed no interest in foraging or accepting food for the past several...

Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Colony Struggling

Hey all, So I am currently keeping a Camp. Penn. colony that seems to have run into some issues. I was hoping you all might have some suggestions about how to address it. So I caught this queen in May of 2017. Last year the colony did very well, going from just the queen to a little over 30 workers ...

Lexington, KY Queen Identification

I found this queen (and many others like her) in mid-July in Lexington, KY. She did not make it, as you can see, and the white you see in the pictures is a bit of mold. She is approximately 10m in length (although I think she was closer to 11-12 mm before she died and shriveled up a bit). She is bla...

Queen found in Lexington, KY

As indicated I caught 20 or so of these queens in Lexington, KY, about a week ago (so mid-July). The one pictured here did not make it, clearly, but the rest are doing well. She is between 7 and 8mm in length. Brown coloration. Pictures below. https://i.imgur.com/PfDUHId.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Snmc...

Kentucky Queen Identification

Hello everyone! I was hoping you all might be able to help ID two queens that I found recently. As stated in the title, I am located in Kentucky, USA. This first queen was found on May 10 inside of a decaying log. She is approximately 11 mm in length, and the most notable thing about her is the yell...

Re: Queen, Workers, and Brood - Found last week in Lexington, Kentucky

Thank you for the ID! I went out expecting to find Pennsylvanicus, but I thought they are solid black in coloration? Managed to get a couple more pictures that better show the reddish coloring I mentioned. She's also laid at least two more eggs since last night! :D http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: Queen, Workers, and Brood - Found last week in Lexington, Kentucky

I have no good way to be terribly precise, but the first pictured are rather small; 3 - 4 mm would be my guess.
Queen is perhaps twice that.

The second is a big gal, easily 15mm or more.

Queen, Workers, and Brood - Found last week in Lexington, Kentucky

I found these guys under some bark on a tree in a park near my house. The queen is kind of tucked into a crevice, and so I was unable to get a very clear picture of her. Hoping an ID is possible based on the workers. Thinking some kind of solenopsis, but I dunno. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1...
