Help with feeding/housing D:

I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was. Decided to check on my ants one day to find 6 workers running around the test tube. They were trying to escape, I assume to gather food, so I decided to feed them some store bought cricket legs with honey. They immediately ate it, but it was kind of difficult...

Re: Queens trying to escape

So I got a 4th queen and added some sterile dirt to the test tube. She isn't digging in either the cotton or the dirt though so she may be an outlier. Though tonight only one of the ants is digging at the cotton, another is just docile and sitting there and one has laid eggs!!!! This is the first qu...

Re: Queens trying to escape

Well, tonight they have only been chewing and biting at the kind of loose cotton instead of actually trying to burrow between the cotton and glass. Hopefully they are just instinctively trying to nest. Like a dog going around in circles before it lays down. It doesn't accomplish anything, it just gi...

Re: Queens trying to escape

Although that is the recommended stup, I've found more success in giving larger (as well as more active) colonies more space. For camponotus (carpenter) queens, try using 1/2 - 3/5 water, as she probably doesn't have enough space to maneuver around her chamber. I think one was a little too cramped ...

Re: Help Keeping Queen Alive

if you find queens keep them even if you want one colony. i did that with 4 queen all made colony's and i released the others. just for extra insurance plus the queen you found last year was probably infertile and there is nothing you can do about that. Great setup though any fertile queen would lo...

Re: Queens trying to escape

How are the test tubes set up? Do they have a lot of space in them? For now, i would recommend just adding more cotton, as they could just be trying to get comfortable.keep and eye on them to make sure they don't escape. They are the typical setup, about 3/4 water, cotton stopper, small space, then...

Queens trying to escape

Any ideas for keeping a camponotus pennsylvanicus queen from chewing through her cotton stopper? I have 3 queens and they are all doing the exact same thing. I don't want to pick the test tubes up to move them to a closed container because from what I've read, it could be just because its a new envi...

Re: Caught 2 Queens! Back in the game!

Yes...camponotus will chew through their cotton...unfortunately I just found that out today. She was chewing at it a little bit the first day that I put her in there. I figured, well, even if she continues, it should hold her for a couple days. While trying to give her space but also trying to make ...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings

Update in Ky: Just caught another camponotus pennsylvanicus this time searching in rotten logs. She had made a nest but no brew were found. She was fairly shallow in the log and I'm not very experienced with catching them this way so I don't know whether she just recently burrowed there or if that i...

Help Keeping Queen Alive

I just caught a Camponotus pennsylvanicus queen and am really hoping she works out and I start a colony. I have her in the same conditions as the ant I caught last year. I'll explain last years queen. Last year I found a Camponotus castaneus queen. She lived for months, but never chewed her wings of...
