Camponotus nuptials have finally started here in KY. Found two over the weekend, one has already laid a couple eggs.
What Part of Kentucky? Also where are you looking?

Cotton Turned Purple In Test Tube

So I have a aphenogaster colony that has had a rough winter and I put them in a new test tube last week. Since then the cotton near the water has slowly gone purple. Is the purple bad?

Hibernation Help

So I live in kentucky and have a aphaenogaster colony. The past couple days they have been very inactive and believe might be entering hibernation. I keep them in my office and am not sure if I should move them or just leave them on my desk. So I live in kentucky and have a aphaenogaster colony. The...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings

I found a queen about 2 weeks ago crawling on my desk, surprisingly! She is extremely small, half the size of my other colonies aphaenogaster workers. Today I checked on her and she laid her first 2 eggs. So this is going to be an interesting colony to keep as I think they can escape my extra omni n...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings

I'm kind of ashamed right now that my girlfriend is having better luck than me at finding queens. She just found another Camponotus queen in her cactus pot this morning. https://i.imgur.com/VZ7JzW2.jpg Time to get a cactus! I had a queen on my mirror of my car today and I grabbed it and as I was wa...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings

Today I found what I thought was a founding champer, i dug around it to find a colony. These ants are less then a centimeter long and blackish grey. It started raining so I brought what I had dug in the jar inside and looked thru it for quite awhile and didnt see any that stuck out as the queen. Im...

Thank you all for the info and knowledge. once I find her and put her in a test tube setup will keeping them in a shoebox tucked away be ok?
A shoebox will be fine just make sure they do not get too cold.
