Queen rescued from potted plant
I was replanting some of my flowers when I found a worker ant, thought nothing of it and continued replanting until I saw a very large ant in the roots of the plant. To my suprise, it was a queen. It was a bit of a hassle to get her into a test tube and keep my cat from inhaling her but I now have h...

Re: Queen rescued from nest
Did you catch any workers for her? If not, you should try to get some from her colony. No, unfortunately, by the time I had gotten her into the test tube, the rest of the workers where gone. I almost got a few but my dog wanted to know what I was doing and... yeah it didn't end too well. There wher...

When I did I noticed a good number of ants running around and I knew it was a nest. My mom told me she was going to poison them so the ants didn't come back but I was able to find t...

Re: Mississippi ants
[/quote] This is a good site for your ant species: http://antmaps.org/? . Just click on Mississippi and you'll see your native species. As for nuptial flights, they will fly from early Spring to late Fall. An exception to this rule is the invasive ant, Solenopsis invicta , which flys any time condit...

Re: My ants are not doing anything
I have recently gotten a colony of western harvester ants (Pogonomymex). I got them a week before Christmas, I think they were ordered from "live ants enclosed" or something (they were unfortunately shipped over. It was a big surprise for me because I wanted to catch a Tetramorium as my starter but...
