You'll have hard time attaching the glass tank to anything else because for plastic you just drill a hole whenever

And it's said it's more natural to have the ants dig in soil than having them in a formicarium but they will also be harder to study

You can find terrarium sand in pet stores, both ones that get sticky with water (if you want them to dig) and one that won't stick even when moist.
