Re: May 12th 2022 United States, Maryland, Brunswick
Not “true” fire ants, but I have heard they are just as a hassle Would you mind explaining that? I'm still learning and everything I look up calls them European fire ants, painful sting included. “True” fire ants are Solenopsis invicta, the Red Imported Fire Ant. They fly almost year-round, excludi...

Re: May 12th 2022 United States, Maryland, Brunswick
I don’t know many northern ants other than Camponotus, but it is a queen. Almost looks like a semi-claustral species, but I am not sure. Can definitely see spines! Reddit says Myrmica, there's a couple species of them near me as well so I think that's what I'll go with for now. Not sure I'll be kee...

Re: May 12th 2022 United States, Maryland, Brunswick
If this is a queen it'll be my first of such a small size, as such it is harder for me to be sure being new to this and all. https://imgur.com/gallery/0j76Dms An ID and confirmation that it is a queen would be greatly appreciated! It seems to have the plateau back but is too small to find wing scar...

Multiple Queen C. Herculeanus
How possible is it? According to a few wiki pages they are often found with multiple in the wild, but they also aren't listed as polygynous. If anything they were stated as Oligogynous.

Re: May 8th 2022 United States, Maryland, Brunswick
Well, certain sites like antswiki and general Wikipedia state they may have multiple queens, however it seems is a tense situation called Oligogyny that ends up with the two queens staying as far apart as possible and one primary egg layer suppressing the other queens. I'd still love to try but I'd ...

Re: May 8th 2022 United States, Maryland, Brunswick
That's true. Since they can both have multiple queens and I found them within inches of each other I'm going to try keeping them together. To make up for the slow growth speed. Camponotus can’t have multiple queens. It is rare to come across a oligynos colony with two queens, let alone more. Only 7...

Re: May 8th 2022 United States, Maryland, Brunswick
Thanks! I did some googling of my own and I was thinking maybe camponotus chromaiodes, as they are common in this area apparently also and coexists with C. Pennsylvanicus which I found 2 of recently here. Is there any way you be able to tell between herculeanus and chromaiodes? And I'll make sure th...

Caught these two in the same log. Please help identify! Admittedly, I am new to this and think they might have been past their first year but I could not capture many workers or brood as they moved much quicker. As such, if I do not replace them, do I need to feed them? https://imgur.com/gallery/vhg...
