I think Tetramorium immigrans, as they eat almost anything, and are easy to care for. They also grow quickly, so beginners wont get bored.

I gave them some sugar water in a small tube and plugged it with cotton. They should be able to drink from the wet cotton. I also dropped in a baby roach I found. No pesticides.
